A Deep Dive into Brazil’s Secondary Cities: Scoping Out the Next Choice Destinations
December 2nd, 2010Campinas, Recife and Porto Alegre draw more attention from domestic and multinational outsourcers
By Tarun George
With the ongoing violence in Brazil’s showcase city, Rio de Janeiro, IT services buyers are increasingly turning away from the large metropolitan sprawls, to focus on smaller ‘secondary cities’. They’re finding that costs are cheaper, higher quality tech talent is available, and there are less bureaucratic hoops to jump through. Today we shine a spotlight on three of these upcoming Brazilian destinations to find out why outsourcing firms are lining up to invest, and what rewards they’re seeing.
The term ‘secondary cities’ conjures up images of smaller towns slightly removed and on the periphery of what’s going on in a country. But because of Brazil’s size, its secondary cities are as populated and urban as Tier I cities anywhere else in Latin America – and it’s there that we find the sourcing action today.

With Eyes on Tech Services, Jamaica Begins to Move Beyond Call Centers
February 12th, 2010
Jamaica Trade and Invest (JTI) is the lead trade promotion agency for BPO and IT services investment.
By Kirk Laughlin
One of the bigger bellweather moments in the migration of services’ work from India to the Nearshore came over a year ago when Delta Airlines publicly let it be known that they were investing heavily in call center functions in Jamaica and “pulling out” of South Asia.
The organization benefiting most from this was E-Services Group, which was acquired by global contact center giant ACS for $85 million. Over 4,000 E-Services employees joined ACS, and Delta has remained a key customer throughout the ownership transition.
This move seems to be part of a string of developments that are putting Jamaica – one of the most convenient Nearshore locations for North American companies – higher on the radar for outsourced services. Long seen as a modest sized call center hub, Jamaica is chipping away at reforming its image into one of a fuller-scale outsourcing destination that has the talent and capacity to play at a higher level that would include finance, accounting and technology services.
“We want to move into the next stratosphere,” says Don Gittens, senior consulting officer at trade promotion agency, Jamaica Trade and Invest, who notes that the country is focused on equipping students with a kind of technology literacy that is seeing increasing demand from US corporations.

World-Class Honduras BPO Facility Set to Open in February
November 12th, 2009SOURCE: LAPRENSAHN.COM (Translated from Espanol)
Altia Park will unveil a new service industry that opens the doors for foreign and domestic companies with the installation of first three-tower communications in February, 2010. This is expected to generate about a thousand jobs in the north of the country.
Daniel Facussé, president of the Honduran Maquila Association, AHM, said that Altia will succeed because everything relating to the sale of communication becomes more profitable to firms in these times of crisis and it also involves outsourcing. Maquila Association provides this service and does so within institutions.
Ruben Sorto, marketing manager Karim’s group, which has started this initiative, explained that despite the blows of the economic crisis, the play was not halted.
To implement this type of modernistic buildings, said Sorto, the country now has favorable conditions, such as having the best fiber optic network in Central and communication infrastructure at low cost. …
ACS Acquisition Gives Xerox Instant Upside in Latin America
September 28th, 2009NSAM Staff Report
Affiliated Computer Services, a well known and visible sourcing services provider in Latin America and the Caribbean, is being absorbed by Xerox in a deal valued at $6.4 billion.
The acquisition immediately gives Xerox access to thousands of new customers as the Norwalk, CT-based supplier focuses on integrating its intellectual property with ACS’s services to create new solutions for end-to-end support of customers’ work processes.
Xerox has seen significant declines in core sales of copiers and printers. The deal for Dallas-based ACS is expected to triple Xerox’s service revenue to an estimated $10 billion next year from 2008′s $3.5 billion.
The acquisition mirrors larger industry trends where functions like document management are more frequently tied into overall business process functions, driven by companies’ desire to become more efficient and agile.

ACS executive VP Ann Vezina
As Tom Blodgett, ACS executive vice president and Group President of ACS’ Business Process Solutions line of business told us in a recent interview “the caravan is moving along” in response to a question about the politics of outsourcing, the organization is definitely not standing still waiting for Accenture, IBM or Tata to claim more business. In an interview with InformationWeek yesterday, ACS executive VP Ann Vezina said that the company is headed toward establishing an even employee balance between offshore and onshore.
This would be a pretty dramatic shift, given the fact that about 70% of the …
