But the country has its eyes on higher ground: software development. After all, why should regional giants like Brazil and Mexico get all the splashy and really interesting work? This past week the Digital GT Committee, a young wing of the Guatemalan Exporters Association, launched its campaign to boost awareness of the country’s “digital industry” and the companies developing products ranging from iPhone games to mobile business solutions.

COUNTRY PROFILE: Guatemala Ramps Up BPO Services, But Can it Meet Skilled Labor Demands?
November 17th, 2010Finding out if you still get the same bang for your Quetzal in Guat City
By Tarun George
When Guatemala arrived on the outsourcing stage a decade ago, it was pegged as the new destination of choice in Central America. But after the first two big fish Capgemini and ACS jumped in, it quickly became evident that Guatemala did not have a well thought-out plan of action to ramp up and ride the outsourcing wave. The perception in following years was of a saturated labor market and a country that had missed its peak.
Recently however, Guatemala is pulling off an impressive comeback in BPO and contact center services, buoyed by promo agency Invest in Guatemala working to replenish the labor supply and provide quality talent to meet firms’ demand. That’s an ambitious goal, and it remains to be seen whether the country can throw off the old image and deliver.

Argentina, Guatemala and Nicaragua Show Up as Top “Undiscovered” Sourcing Destinations
April 20th, 2010First of all, let’s be clear: India will remain part of your outsourcing strategy and that is despite increasing complaints about rising costs and diminishing work quality, said Stephanie Moore, former Forrester Outsourcing analyst and chief strategist for UST Global, a global IT outsourcer. The reason? No other nation has the massive skilled labor availability that India has and that is that. But the hunt is on for alternative sites and every outsourcer is trolling for new destinations. The surprise is there are so many new to the game. Where to go beyond India, China, the Philippines, and Brazil ― the obvious ABI locales? There are plenty of choices.

Announcing the Premiere of the Executive Video Forum!
March 26th, 2010Friends and Colleagues: We’re very excited to launch a new feature at Nearshore Americas today called the Executive Video Forum – a video roundtable program that gets to the heart what’s really going on within the nations that make up the Nearshore sourcing community.
Our first executive forum was filmed recently in Guatemala City – a city that is rapidly becoming a key BPO hub in Central America. One of the most interesting issues that our panel addressed was how Guatemala plans to “learn from past mistakes” in countries like India and the Philippines in managing growth and competition for talent.
See what our panelists had to say about this critical issue and other key development in Guatemala outsourcing:
