América Móvil’s 5G Expansion May Slash Prices in LatAm

Mexican telecom giant América Móvil is investing billions of dollars in 5G network expansion, raising expectations for lower wireless telecom costs across Latin America.

Led by billionaire Carlos Slim, América Móvil operates in numerous countries throughout the region. During a recent discussion with industry analysts, CEO Daniel Hajj emphasized that expanding 5G networks is the company’s top priority, according to Reuters.

This announcement follows América Móvil’s earlier projection of an impressive US$7 billion in capital expenditure for this year, with analysts suggesting that a significant portion of this investment will be directed toward building 5G infrastructure in Latin American countries.

Hajj also mentioned plans for additional financing to support 5G expansion in select markets, including Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.

Telcel, América Móvil’s subsidiary in Mexico, has already signed up over 10 million subscribers to its 5G network, just two years after launching commercial services.

According to an Ericsson analysis, more than 42% of Latin Americans are expected to be connected to 5G networks by 2026.

Uruguay was the first country in the region to launch 5G services in 2019, and the adoption of 5G accelerated in early 2023 when eight countries began offering commercial 5G services.
