Movistar Chile will begin using drones to oversee part of its fiber-optic network. Because the nation is long, skinny and full of mountains, valleys, deserts and lakes, monitoring for damage can be an arduous task. So when a recent trial of the new technology showed that drones could increase productivity by as much as 300%, making the switch was a no-brainer. The company says relying on drones will be helpful at all times but especially following the natural catastrophes, namely earthquakes, that routinely hit Chile. In addition to efficiency gains, deploying drones will also help keep workers out of dangerous areas.
