This initiative follows similar partnerships established by Huawei and UNESCO to provide digital training in Egypt, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
However, UN officials expressed their desire for Huawei to prioritize marginalized communities and graduates residing in rural areas with limited access to internet infrastructure.
While Huawei did not explicitly confirm its focus on rural or urban populations, Daniel Zhou, President of Huawei for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized their commitment to leveraging technology for positive societal impact.
“When we consider these new technologies, we envision their application for noble causes, particularly those that contribute to human development,” Zhou stated.
Huawei boasts partnerships with an impressive 470 universities and colleges across Latin America for digital training. Its talent programs include the “Seeds for the Future” initiative, which offers scholarships to students seeking to acquire digital skills. Additionally, the company sponsors technology competitions.
In 2021, Huawei declared that it had already devoted US$150 million to fostering global talent development. The company further pledged to invest an additional equivalent amount, reaching a total of US$300 million, by 2026.
