Obama Offers Encouragement to LatAm Industries Following Trump Win

During a visit to Peru, President Barack Obama said that Donald Trump is very likely to re-examine U.S. trade deals with Latin America, but is unlikely to reverse the warming of ties with Cuba.

“There are going to be tensions that arise, probably around trade more than anything,” he told an audience of students and young leaders from Latin America. “Because the president-elect campaigned on looking at every trade policy and potentially reversing those policies.” However, he also mentioned that Trump will have difficulty making drastic changes to U.S. policy.

Furthermore, he said that the country’s security depends on nations in Latin America doing well enough to keep people at home, rather than risking an illegal entry into the United States.
