The Brazilian city of São Paulo has the largest pool of technology professionals in all of Latin America, followed by Mexico City and the Chilean capital Santiago, according to CBRE’s report titled “Scoring Tech Talent”.
When it comes to the rate of growth in tech jobs, Costa Rica’s San Jose is far ahead of many cities of the region. Tech employment in San Jose increased 77% in the past five years.
Latin America’s tech workforce has boomed over the past five years, with average pay remaining around 38% of those in the US, the report noted, adding that the region is increasingly focusing on software development.
Mexico City generated approximately 23,000 technology graduates in 2022, a larger increase than the 15,000 professionals who graduated from universities in São Paulo during the same year.
However, Mexico City’s luster is swiftly waning due to a dramatic increase in local IT wages in recent years. Software developer salaries climbed 11% over a five-year period, which is more than double the Latin American average salary growth of 5%.
Guadalajara, dubbed as Mexico’s Silicon Valley, had a staggering 60% increase in tech employment over the previous five years, compared to 33% in Monterrey and 29% in Mexico City.
Guadalajara’s average wage for IT professionals is US$35,000. The city is a magnet for IT businesses since it is home to over a million tech workers, and office space rates are also reasonably priced.
