New Report Highlights a Shift in Demand for Specific Tech Skills

Demand for specific tech skills is shifting alongside the evolution of new technologies, according to a new study by Indeed.com, an online job board.

The tech skills that most IT companies are looking for in their candidates is currently experience with React, a JavaScript library used to create user interfaces.

“So far in 2017, the React project has had the second-highest number of contributors on Github, a platform used by developers to share code and build businesses,” says Indeed economist Daniel Culbertson.

Indeed said it analyzed hundreds of thousands of job postings published over the past several months and ranked them by how often they showed up in job descriptions for tech roles.

When it comes to programming languages, skills in Java are the most sought-after, appearing in 30% of tech-focused job descriptions. This demand for Java professionals clearly correlates with the increasing demand for mobile apps and business operations systems.

Python takes fifth place on Indeed’s list. Like Java, it’s a general-purpose programming language, but is used primarily on artificial intelligence projects.

Experience with agile methodologies is reportedly the second most desirable quality in new employees, according to the report.

Cloud computing tech skills are also high on the list, with the report showing a steep surge in employer interest in cloud computing platforms, specifically Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

Although a growing number of job seekers have continued to tout their Linux skills, employers are no longer showing much interest in it. Experience is other areas, such as Oracle and C or C++, are also fading in demand.

“The ever-evolving tech industry keeps generating new software and tools, which means tech workers can never stop developing their skills,” Culbertson wrote in a separate blog post.
