WWF Warns Mexico to Save Near-extinct Vaquita

One of the rarest creatures in the world, the vaquita (pictured), is on the brink of extinction, the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) has warned Mexico.

“Time is rapidly running out for the vaquita, we could tragically lose the ‘panda of the sea’ in a matter of months,” said Chris Gee, head of campaigns at WWF-UK.

The world’s 30 remaining vaquitas are all believed to reside in the Upper Gulf of California.

WWF has called for a permanent gillnet ban to be introduced by the Mexican government, as the temporary ban is due to expire this week.
