Foreign tourists are streaming into Jamaica by the thousands, leaving immigration authorities in the island’s airports overwhelmed.
Officials are grappling with the influx, leading to long lines of passengers at the country’s main airport in Kingston, The Associated Press reported.
In the first three months of this year, Jamaica welcomed more than 1.18 million international travelers, an increase of almost 100% compared to the same period last year.
These tourists are estimated to contribute US$1.15 billion to the country’s tourism revenue, a 46% increase from the US$786 million collected during the same period in 2022.
The tourism sector generates more than half of the country’s total foreign exchange earnings and accounts for a quarter of all jobs in the country. Most tourist activity is concentrated on the north coast, especially in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio, as well as Negril, on the western tip of the island.
The Jamaican government committed US$70 million to modernize Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport, US$34 million of which would be used to extend the runways.
Jamaica attracted 3.7 million international tourists in 2022, but the government hopes to see more than 5 million tourists annually from 2025 onwards.
The birthplace of reggae music, Jamaica has miles of beaches, dozens of blue lagoons, waterfalls and resorts.
