In a bold new initiative, El Salvador is set to recruit foreign software engineers to train university students in artificial intelligence.
This educational program will be an extension of the country’s existing CUBO+ initiative, which has already trained over 200 Salvadorans in blockchain technology.
The AI-focused program will initially launch as a pilot with a select group of students, with plans to refine and expand the curriculum over time.
Stacy Herbert, director of the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC), stated that CUBO+ IA will follow the same model as the CUBO+ program for Bitcoin developers. “We will have the best and brightest engineers in the world teaching Salvadorans about this new technology,” she said.
With a newly enacted AI law, El Salvador aims to foster open-source development and create a clear, supportive regulatory framework for AI. The initiative could attract AI researchers and developers, further positioning the country as a hub for foreign investment in emerging technologies.
However, analysts caution that while El Salvador is quick to launch ambitious programs, it has a history of abandoning them just as swiftly.
The country made Bitcoin legal tender and integrated Bitcoin education into schools while exploring geothermal energy for cryptocurrency mining. However, under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), El Salvador has recently scaled back its Bitcoin initiatives.
