Narayan AmmachchiGoogle has begun construction on a new transatlantic submarine cable system to connect the Caribbean country of Bermuda to the United States and Europe.
The cable, known as Nuvem, a Portuguese word for “cloud”, is the first submarine cable system to connect Bermuda with Europe.
If everything goes according to the plan, the cable system will go live in 2026, significantly improving the resilience and reliability of the network in the Caribbean nation.
Over the past few years, Bermuda has been making serious attempts to attract investment in subsea cable infrastructure as part of a broader goal of building a digital hub for storing and processing data.
The Caribbean nation has even passed new legislation to create cable corridors and streamline permitting, according to Google.
“With improved internet affordability and access, societies can continue to modernize — people acquire skills and knowledge that open doors to new job opportunities, while businesses and governments increase productivity as a result of digital transformation,” Google added.
In the United States, Nuvem will land in South Carolina and connect to Google’s existing cable system Firmina, which weaves together the United States with Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.
This will create a new high-capacity data corridor between North America, South America and Europe, stated Google in a blogpost.
