Narayan AmmachchiChinese tech giant Huawei is solidifying its presence in Peru, aiming to establish the country as a central hub for its cloud services in Latin America.
Huawei’s plan is underscored by its recent partnerships with leading Peruvian universities and the launch of a tech hackathon aimed at fostering young talent.
In November 2023, Huawei signed a partnership agreement with César Vallejo University (UCV), following a similar agreement established two months prior with the University of San Martín de Porres.
Through these partnerships, Huawei pledges to provide students with comprehensive training in cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, equipping them with the skills necessary to succeed in the digital economy.
“We are facing various economic and technological challenges as we work to expand cloud services,” acknowledged Liu Jiaxin, CEO of Huawei in Peru. “Our strategy is to address these challenges through the use of technology.”
Jiaxin stated that Huawei is open to hire UCV students who excel during their training.
Huawei is also actively engaging with the wider tech community in Peru. The upcoming hackathon in Lima offers a US$10,000 prize to young entrepreneurs who develop the most innovative and impactful cloud application.
Huawei is apparently trying to accelerate the adoption of cloud-based solutions across diverse industries with the help of partnerships and hackathons.
The company currently provides cloud services to over 5,300 customers across the region, experiencing significant growth in 2022 with a nearly 100% increase in customer base, as reported by China’s Xinhua news agency.
Huawei’s cloud journey in Peru began in 2019. Today, the company boasts a customer base of 400 businesses.
