Mexico’s Tourism Sector Booming, Americans Are Main Visitors

As many as 3.4 million Americans visited Mexico between January and April this year, a 14.7% increase over the same period in 2015.
Last year, Mexico City was one of the most visited cities in the world, and is still among the global cities topping the New York Times’ list of 52 places to visit in 2016.
According to CNS News, international cruise ships are anchoring in Mexico’s ports like never before, with Cozumel, a beautiful island off the Mexican Caribbean coast, moving closer to becoming the top cruising destination worldwide.
Tourism is booming despite warnings from the US travel advisory, which often warns Americans against visiting certain parts of Mexico.
Reports say a record number of people are visiting Cancun, home to several beautiful and impressive resorts ideal for visitors wanting to enjoy the tropical Yucatan climate.
Mexico has seen a 44% increase in visits by cruise line passengers in the past three years, with 6.12 million expected to disembark on Mexico’s shores this year, according to CNS News.
The impact of the booming tourism can be seen in hotel bookings, which grew by 5.5% in March over the same period last year. Last year, as many as 32.1 million international tourists arrived in Mexico by air, generating billions of dollars in tourism revenue, which also helped Mexico offset the decrease in oil export.
Enthused by this growth, Mexico’s government is looking at promoting its little known tourist sites including Huatulco in Oaxaca, Loreto in Baja California Sur, and Ixtapa in Guerrero.
