This weekend’s Golden Globes marked a grand night for Mexican cinema. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu won best director for The Revenant, which also took home best picture, while actor Gael Garcia Bernal won best performance in a TV musical or comedy for Mozart in the Jungle. Add both to your watch list, then be sure to catch up on some other Mexican classics you may have missed. Start with Iñárritu’s feature debut Amores Perros and Garcia Bernal’s breakout Y Tu Mamá También. And don’t miss Guillermo del Toro’s haunting Pan’s Labrynth, cartel culture documentary Narco Cultura, or Robert Rodriguez’s cult classic El Mariachi, which though made by a U.S. director was shot on a shoestring budget in Mexico for a Mexican audience.
