Millions of current and former customers of telecom giant AT&T had their personal information exposed following a major data breach in the company.
The breached data, believed to date back to 2019 or earlier, pertains to approximately 7.6 million current AT&T customers and 65.4 million former account holders.
It’s not been specified whether the breach happened in AT&T’s internal systems or through a third-party supplier.
The data exposed includes full names, email addresses and dates of birth. According to AT&T, no financial information was taken.
However, the company proactively reset customer passcodes and urged users to watch out for suspicious activity in their bank accounts.
The data batches can already be found online. AT&T assured that there’s no evidence of it being misused, but it nevertheless enlisted cybersecurity experts to bolster its security measures.
News of the breach began circulating in hacking forums two weeks prior to AT&T’s official confirmation of the hack. Questions remain about this incident’s potential connection to a similar breach reported in 2021 and which the company never recognized officially.
