In a symbolic show of the Obama administration’s desire to end the nation’s half-century embargo with Cuba, the acclaimed band Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club will play at the White House to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. Widely known throughout the island nation, the Cuban luminaries rose to prominence in the United States after the release of a 1999 Oscar-nominate documentary of the same name that entertainment website Vulture recently named as one of the 50 best music docs ever made. The aging band is in the midst of a worldwide retirement tour and will play the White House, where no Cuban act has performed in more than 50 years, this week on Thursday, October 15.
