More and more software developers are using cloud technology thanks to remote work.
A survey by Docker Inc. found that nearly 64% of developers are now utilizing the cloud for software development. Additionally, over 36% are employing other remote environments and tools such as GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod and Coder.
While remote work significantly drives this trend, analysts suggest other factors are also at play. The growing size and complexity of software applications necessitate scalable solutions that the cloud can provide more efficiently than traditional local environments.
Cloud tech offers the potential for significantly increased efficiency, enabling developers to streamline their workflows and manage resources more effectively. This results in shorter build times.
Docker’s survey also revealed common challenges developers face in their work. When asked where their teams encounter difficulties, respondents pointed to the planning (31%), estimation (24%) and designing (22%) stages.
In the case of the planning stage, many developers expressed a need for better tools to assist in this phase. Effective planning is crucial for project success, and the demand for improved tools highlights the importance of this stage in the development lifecycle.
Approximately 20% of respondents reported difficulties during the debugging, troubleshooting and testing phases. These stages are critical for ensuring that the software functions correctly and meets quality standards.
Docker claims to have contacted 885 software developers working for large companies for the study.
