Narayan AmmachchiIndian IT services giant Infosys has unveiled a technology innovation center in the US state of Rhode Island, in addition to partnering with a local technology school for launching a digital lab.
The Bangalore, India-based IT company has already taken on board 100 employees in Rhode Island, with plans to increase the headcount to 500 over the next three years.
Infosys has hired more than 7,600 Americans since May 2017, when it vowed to create 10,000 new jobs in the North American country, which accounts for more than 60% of its revenue.
The innovation center, located in Providence, the capital city of Rhode Island, will help close the gap for design and human-centric skills in technology fields, stated the company officials at the time of inauguration last week.
The center will offer hands-on experience to early career designers and design graduates, while supporting digital transformation efforts of local enterprises.
As the world goes increasingly digital, there will be a huge demand for designers.
“The demand for talent with strategic design skills will only rise,” stated Salil Parekh, CEO, Infosys. “Critical thinking led by the practice of strategic design is key to building the world-class, human-centric solutions our clients need to accelerate their digital transformations.”
The digital Lab that Infosys will build in association with the Community College of Rhode Island will teach students in new digital skills. Named as ‘Digital Economy Aspirations Lab’, the technology school will be housed at Infosys Providence Center.
The goal of the lab is to develop what it calls ‘bridge programming’ for students wanting to pursue a four-year degree in information technology. The Indian firm has similarly allied with the Rhode island School of Design.
