A global study by Remitly Global Inc. has placed Mexico, Brazil, and Chile among the world’s top 15 nations for entrepreneurial spirit.
The research draws on the “grit” scale created by psychologist Angela Duckworth at the University of Pennsylvania, assessing over 7,000 people across 26 countries. The scale measures determination to achieve long-term goals despite obstacles. Higher scores indicate stronger perseverance; lower scores suggest a greater tendency to abandon goals when challenges arise.
Brazil ranks eighth with 40.51 points, reflecting an economy where two in five workers start businesses out of necessity. Despite strong creativity and optimism, the country shows a four-point gap between entrepreneurial mindset and actual business creation.
Mexico comes 14th with 40.19 points — outpacing Australia and Italy — but faces an eight-point gap between ambition and startup activity, underscoring structural hurdles despite strong determination.
Chile, with 38.86 points, ranks 23rd in entrepreneurial spirit yet stands out globally for closing the gap between mindset and action, scoring a 17-point lead. This suggests that favorable business conditions can turn even moderate enthusiasm into real-world entrepreneurship.
Overall, the study shows that while ambition drives innovation, ecosystems and support networks often decide whether ideas become successful enterprises.
