Sea of Plastic Contaminates Caribbean from Guatemala Source

A massive “sea of plastic” has been discovered in the Caribbean Sea off the northern coast of Honduras, close to the the idyllic island of Roatan.

The contamination is made up of large masses of plastic bottles, cutlery, and polystyrene plates, as well as countless plastic bags.

The Blue Planet Society, which campaigns against exploitation of the world’s oceans, said the pollution appeared to originate from the Motagua River in nearby Guatemala.

“Ultimately, we will only solve this if government, manufacturers, and retailers act urgently to stop the plastic pollution menace at source,” said a spokesperson from the society.

The discovery was made by underwater photographer Caroline Power, who also called for people to ditch plastic bags, bottles, and food packaging.
