Suriname Taps EllaLink Subsea Cable for High-Speed Route to Europe

State-owned telecom operator Telesur has signed a letter of intent with EllaLink to secure Suriname a high-speed digital shortcut to hubs in Europe, Brazil, and the United States.

Suriname is the first country to join EllaLink’s Caribbean Gateway initiative, which aims to expand submarine cable connectivity across the region.

Operational since 2021, the EllaLink cable system delivers a direct link between Europe and Latin America via Portugal and Brazil. With a capacity of 100 terabits per second, the network offers ultra-low latency, reducing data transmission delays between the two continents to less than 60 milliseconds.

This connection provides Suriname with critical internet capacity and alternative global routing, significantly reducing the country’s historical reliance on North American data paths. The expansion comes as EllaLink weighs further growth into French Guiana and Mauritania.

EllaLink was developed under the Building the Europe Link to Latin America (BELLA) program, a collaboration supported by the European Union and regional research and education networks. The move complements Telesur’s existing infrastructure, including the Suriname-Guyana Submarine Cable System –a partnership with GT&T that links the country to Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
