The Caribbean island of St Kitts has started a new initiative to study Paradise Reef, the country’s beautiful natural coral reef.
The St Kitts Department of Environment and the Department of Marine Resources have installed a Coral Reef Early Warning System (CREWS), which is part of a climate change adaptation project funded by the United States Agency for International Development.
The system will measure wind speeds, wind gusts, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and precipitation, according to Cheryl Jeffers, Conservation Officer in the Department of Environment.
“The impacts of climate change to our marine environment continue to be serious and as such partnerships such as these are welcomed,” she told the Caribbean Journal.
