Back-to-Back Best Director Oscars for Iñárritu

Mexicans cleaned up at the Academy Awards last night. In addition to providing a platform for Leonardo DiCaprio to win his first best actor award, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” earned the Mexican auteur his second straight best director Oscar and put Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki of Mexico City into the history books with his third consecutive best cinematography honor. Iñárritu, who won last year for Birdman, did more than just do his country proud by speaking out on industry racism for all people of color. In his acceptance speech, the director spoke poignantly about prejudice and wished for a day when the “color of our skin becomes as irrelevant as the length of our hair.”
