Today, October 20, is the eighth annual International Sloth Day, where sloth lovers around the world celebrate the existence of these delightfully lazy Latin American creatures.
Created in 2010 by AIUNAU, a non-profit foundation dedicated to the protection of wildlife, the occasion is to help raise awareness of the conservation efforts for sloths in South America.
Many sloths are killed each year, or captured to be sold as pets, so this event is to help people understand these animals and raise money to keep them from going extinct, which has happened to several species already.
For centuries, people have considered sloths as stupid or lazy creatures, but we think they’re onto something. If you slept 9-10 hours a day, you too would have a permanent smile.
