Leftist candidate Yamandú Orsi has been elected as Uruguay’s new president, defeating the incumbent conservative governing coalition in a closely contested election on Sunday.
His victory marks the return of the Broad Front coalition to power, a political force that previously oversaw a period of significant economic growth and progressive reforms, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, abortion, and regulated marijuana sales.
Orsi, a 57-year-old former history teacher and advocate for working-class interests, aims to revitalize Uruguay’s economy by blending market-friendly policies with redistributive social programs.
Among his economic priorities are tax incentives to attract investment and strengthen the agricultural sector, a key component of the country’s economy.
Addressing pressing social issues, Orsi plans to implement measures to reduce childhood poverty, which currently affects 25% of Uruguay’s population.
His agenda also includes moderate security reforms to address public safety concerns without alienating labor unions or conservative sectors. Álvaro Delgado, the center-right candidate, conceded defeat as vote counting continued.
Uruguayans recently rejected controversial pension reforms that would have included substantial payouts and the redistribution of private funds. In addition, Orsi takes office amid a backdrop of economic stagnation and growing concerns over organized crime.
His administration is also expected to reevaluate a trade agreement with China pursued by outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou, favoring a stronger alignment with Mercosur, a regional trade bloc.
In his victory speech, Orsi adopted a unifying tone, emphasizing collaboration and national dialogue. “We need everyone’s participation to build a better Uruguay,” he said, pledging to bridge divides within the nation.
