Nexus 2024 Keynote: Following the Road to Nearshore Tech Triumph

“I remember being at an offsite with some of my peers at Google, just talking, giving personal details.”

Bismarck Lepe –Founder, former CEO and Executive Chairman at Wizeline– tells the anecdote as he casually paces back and forth in front ot the Nexus 2024 audience.

“‘Wow, you’re Mexican! I didn’t think you were. I thought you were Persian, or Filipino or Indian.’ And then, another one of my co-workers (this was a different time) said: ‘No, it’s all about context. You put a cook’s hat on him, and put him behind a serving aisle, and he looks Mexican’… It’s OK to laugh. It’s fine!”

Bismarck kept stringing anectdote after anecdote during his keynote speech, and though all of them were somewhat different in tone and setting, they all underscored a similar point: things have changed in nearshore tech.

When speaking of nearshore tech success stories, Bismarck Lepe is among the top candidates for a good yarn. The son of Mexican immigrants in the US, his journey is that of a man who made the best out of the opportunities given to him: from his parents’ obsession with his education, to his encounter with Google in the early days of the company, all the way to his nearshoring operations, which led to Bismarck reconnecting with his roots.

All of that was shared by Bismarck with the Nexus audience in a casual, candid speech, with the Hudson and the Manhattan skyline in the background.

Bismarck’s tale underscores the potential in Mexican tech, which has yet to be fully exploited; the importance of education in the road to tech success; and what nearshore players need to do in order to see more and more stories of triumph in the IT industry.
