Overcoming Brogrammer Culture

From North Carolina to Arizona to South Africa, people in tech are now — finally — focused on attracting more women to the field. Due to historic gender norms and what is perceived as a “brogrammer” culture, half the population has long been deterred from pursuing a career in software development, systems engineering, and other related tech jobs. This is so ingrained that ThoughtWorks CTO Rebecca Parsons says that “one of my professors told me in a class that women were incapable of understanding math and science.” She was able to overcome these hurdles and is now trying to help others do the same at ThoughtWorks, which has sought to maintain a 50/50 gender ratio at its office in Quito, Ecuador.
