WFP Plans to Open Barbados Office to Aid in Hurricane Support

The World Food Programme (WFP), one of the largest humanitarian agencies in the world, is showing interest in opening a new office in Barbados, in order to better aid the Eastern Caribbean region in its hurricane recovery efforts.

The office is expected to provide technical support and capacity building to all the national protection systems in the Caribbean Community, through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), according to local daily Barbados Today, which cites Miguel Barreto, Regional Director of the WFP.

“We need to strengthen the systems in order to be prepared for the next emergency,” said Barreto, also stressing that his agency would look at providing better logistics through Panama, a long-established WFP base.
