Mexicans Shrug Off Trump’s ‘Gulf of America’ Order

Mexicans have largely dismissed President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated “the Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico,” emphasizing that Trump’s decision has no impact on Mexicans.

After signing the order, Trump praised the new name and insisted on the grave conditions of border safety due to drug cartels.

Sheinbaum did not address the cartel issue but expressed surprise that Google planned to comply with Trump’s directive, displaying “Gulf of America” on its maps. However, Google clarified that users in Mexico would still see “Gulf of Mexico” on their maps.

Some political critics are urging Sheinbaum to strongly condemn the move, questioning what would happen if Trump started referring to Mexico as “Old Mexico.”

Rocío Nahle, Governor of Veracruz, dismissed Trump’s decision, stating on social media that “the Gulf of Mexico will always be our rich and great Gulf of Mexico.”

Ordinary Mexicans have ridiculed the move, calling it “absurd” and accusing Trump of trying to erase 500 years of history. Others have mocked the U.S. president, joking about his excessive patriotism.
