Left-leaning politician Yamandú Orsi is vowing to reform the country’s social security system and lower the retirement age less than a week after taking office as the President of Uruguay.
Representing the Broad Front, a left-wing coalition, Orsi secured victory over conservative candidate Álvaro Delgado in the November 2024 runoff election.
His administration plans to increase social spending to generate employment opportunities for young people and expand educational scholarships to support vulnerable communities.
Orsi has also pledged to strengthen Uruguay’s services export sector, with a particular focus on audiovisual products.
Additionally, his government aims to accelerate renewable energy production by seeking international partnerships for green hydrogen development.
He has expressed a strong commitment to electrifying the transportation sector to further reduce carbon emissions. Uruguay already ranks among the world’s top renewable energy producers.
Despite his ambitious agenda, some analysts warn that Orsi may steer the country toward policies similar to those adopted by Argentina a decade ago. He faces mounting pressure from leftist allies and trade unions to implement labor-friendly policies, with Labor Minister Juan Castillo actively advocating for stronger worker protections.
However, Uruguay’s technology sector is likely to see continued government support, as Orsi has proposed tax incentives to attract foreign investment in agriculture and technology.
Before assuming the presidency, Orsi served as the mayor of Canelones, a region known for its beaches and cattle ranches. Notably, Canelones has also become a strategic location for global tech investments, with Google developing a mega data center there.
